Victoria Moron

Nice to meet you! My name is Victoria Moron and I’m a Venezuelan artist based in the US. You and I might have something in common if you also grew up fascinated by animation from the 90s to the early 2000s.

I’ve always wondered what happened behind the scenes during the creation of my favorite animated movies and TV shows; I saw these worlds and characters come to life inside my parents’ old Phillips CRT TV when I watched Cartoon Network with my older brother.

I spent a lot of time by myself trying to recreate what I saw on TV and often made storyboards on napkins when I went out to have dinner with my family. I realized that I also wanted to develop my own projects and talk about my experiences through art.

I started working with traditional mediums like oil paints, ink, and markers because I love vibrant, expressive colors, and sharp line-art while designing my characters. Digital art has become a favorite medium to work with due to its limitless potential for world-building.

Having an art career felt almost impossible; as political tensions in my country started to reach a boiling point during my teenage years, I often fixated on my own dreams as a form of escapism. This took me to learning more about the surrealist movement from the 1950s when I moved to the United States a couple of years later.

Remedios Varo’s work inspired by magic and alchemy fascinated me; she was known as ‘’The Surrealist Witch’’ due to the representations she painted of her inner world. Many women inside the surrealist movement had rebel spirits, and they took back control of their lives and narratives even as immigrants and political refugees. All the symbolism and oneiric landscapes in those works have shaped the artist that I have become today.

There are a lot of these dreamlike aspects from Surrealism present in many video games as well: the combination of music, characters in action and fascinating lands waiting for us to explore its story must be one of the ultimate forms of art due to their unique ability to interact with the player. I love making art that not only feels good to look at, but that interacts with the viewer as well.

I believe my vision reflects the constant search for identity and control over our own lives, and my dream is to inspire others with my creations like surrealism, animation and video games did with me.
